The Fourth Bedroom

MNGirl-final.jpg

When my husband and I bought our home five years ago, we knew we wanted four bedrooms. What we would use that fourth room for, we weren’t sure. It could be a spare room, a play room, or a kid’s room. Everything was up in the air, but it had to be four rooms.

When I started writing, I would sit at our kitchen table. I was on maternity leave and it was easier to have everything on the same level. Things got cluttered really quickly and I almost broke my new laptop with spilled coffee. I needed my own space!

I now occupy that fourth bedroom. It has become my office, my sanctuary, the place where I can go to be alone and put my thoughts to paper.

Why do I love this space? It’s the quietest room in the home, for one.  It's also the coldest room in our home in the summer and the warmest room in the home during the winter. It's comfortable. I lucked out! I have a window to get natural light and a closet where I can store all my goodies and paperbacks.

I can play my music playlists on my really late nights and it won’t disturb sleeping children. It’s spacious. I can sprawl on the floor or jog in place to get my blood flowing if needed. I love my fourth bedroom! It's where I write.

As we all know sometimes our minds need a break or we need to get the creative juice flowing. I also have two “go-to” spots that I occupy when I need to plot the next step in a story. My first is my bathtub. I throw some bubbles or a bath-bomb in there, light a candle, and relax. Some of my best ideas have been worked out in that tub.

My second is the “cuddler” end of my couch. When my husband and I were picking out furniture, I didn’t care about our table, our television stand or end tables. I was focused on the couch. I wanted big and comfy. It's where we spend time as a family and once my two kiddos go to bed, it's where we spend our evenings talking, reconnecting, and usually enjoying a cocktail or wine. My favorite spot on that couch is called the “cuddler.” It's big enough for two people and hugs every part of the body. I love it.

These are my spots to plot and create. As an author, I’ve come to appreciate the aspects of each room. They aren’t fancy and I usually am interrupted by small children frequently. It works for me!
