My Dream Office

Mari Carr's June Kisses

My dream office has been a long time in the making. When I started seriously writing my first novel sixteen years ago, I trudged down to an unfinished basement, where—for some reason—our ancient computer was set up. I’d bundle up in several blankets in the dead of night—insomnia is a bitch—and pour my heart out on the page.

From the basement, I moved to the high-top table in the kitchen with a brand-new laptop. It was there I penned and sold my first sexy romance, Erotic Research. However, trust me when I say…stools are unforgiving on the back. When the pain from my “kitchen office” grew too unbearable, my laptop and I moved to the dining room table.

I live in a beautiful old home that felt way too small when my children were growing up. Now, I’m an “almost” empty nester and this lovely place fits me and my husband just right.

Five years ago, my husband, a fair hand with a hammer, gave me my office, closing in the screened-in back porch, putting in lots of windows to let in the bright morning sunshine, purchasing a REAL desk, and building a large bookshelf for all my “keeper books” and small treasures. I can still recall how exciting it was to move into what has become my favorite place on the planet.

My office, usually full of sleeping kitties, is decorated with gifts from dear friends as well as all my favorite pop culture and literature knick knacks. From Harry Potter to Outlander to Big Bang Theory, I am surrounded by things I love, that inspire me, that feed my imagination and allow me to weave my stories.

As you can see from the pictures hanging on the walls, I am a huge fan of words—all words. Most of the decorations in my office are actually signs with sayings. Everything from “And they all lived happily ever after” to “Everyone can’t be Irish, somebody has to drive.” Most of my mornings begin with the huge mug of iced tea, and they almost always end with the glass of wine.

And after my time in front of the computer is over, there’s a cozy sectional where I can curl up with my favorite books.

Mari Carr

Writing a book was number one on Mari Carr’s bucket list and on her thirty-fourth birthday, she set out to see that goal achieved. Too many years later, her computer is jammed full of stories — novels, novellas, short stories and dead-ends, and she has nearly a hundred published works, including her popular Wild Irish and Compass books, along with the Trinity Masters series she writes with Lila Dubois.

Virginia native Mari Carr is a New York Times and USA TODAY bestseller of contemporary erotic romance novels. With over one million copies of her books sold, Mari was the winner of the Romance Writers of America’s Passionate Plume award for her novella, Erotic Research.
