A Better World

SMUG BASTARD_EBOOK(1).jpg

I wonder what people envision author’s “writing rooms” to look like?  I imagine Stephen King in a dark mahogany office, shelves lined with old books as he whips out sheet after sheet of paper from an old dusty typewriter, like Angela Lansbury. Yes, my brain is stuck in the 1980’s. The actuality is probably far different and maybe not much different than mine.

I normally don't write at home, choosing cafes to work in, but with the pandemic, I've had to learn to work from home. I bounce between my office and my dining table to get a different change of scenery. I miss the buzz of a cafe, the smell of coffee, the energy of people around me, which focuses me more than when I work from home.

At home, I find too many distractions! At a cafe, when I sit down there is nothing else to do but write. I'm trying to get better at writing from home, but man, my kitchen is there...calling to me...tempting me.

Not a fast-moving morning person, I get my coffee and take my pup, Cooper, for a walk, then drop him off at daycare by 9am. Yes, I am THAT dog mom. My baby is the best, but when he’s home with me he wants all my attention and I’m already struggling with not being distracted at home.

Keeping to his schedule like before the pandemic is for both of our sanity. He’s a needy, total mama’s boy…I seriously don’t know how parents write at home with kids around. I bow down.

Normally, I would go workout before writing (another thing I’m not good at doing from home), but for now around 9:30 or 10, I put my butt in the chair. Music is a huge part of my writing. Even if it only becomes background noise, it sets my mood. For example, I’m doing a sexy scene right now and "Never Tear Us Apart," by Bishop Briggs is playing. Oh, the days I’d write a sex scene in Starbucks, look up blushing and smirking, thinking “Oh, you guys have no idea what I just wrote!” Good times.

I used to actually put on pants before too (yes, leggings ARE pants! They cover your legs they are pants in my book). So you want pictures of me writing? Sorry…I’m taking this whole stay at home thing seriously!

Hopefully I can get the buzz of a café and brush my hair again…but until then…I’ll be here diving into a world that is much better than the one outside!
